Wilderness First Aid in the Field

Saturday, September 14 through Sunday, September 15, 9a-6p, $200

Join Train NEK for a SOLO-certifying WFA-in-the-Field based out of the Osmore Pond Shelter in beautiful New Discovery State Park. We’ll cover all the basics of how to prevent, recognize, and treat common injuries and life threatening emergencies while on outdoor trips – and you’ll have lots of time to practice your skills during realistic practical sessions and scenarios. State Park entry and camping are included (camping is not mandatory, but it’s a nice option!), so you’ll have time to relax and enjoy the area before and after class. Just let the attendant know you’re with the class when you arrive and you’ll be directed from there. They’ll be expecting you!

Course Description

The two-day SOLO Wilderness First Aid course is ideal for outdoor enthusiasts who engage in trips one mile or more from definitive care, including hikers, climbers, skiers, paddlers, bikers, camp counselors, scouts, and parents of active children – anyone who wants to feel more independent, empowered and capable during outdoor pursuits. It also meets American Camping Association guidelines.

What is Taught? The WFA curriculum focuses on: Prevention, Response and Assessment, Initial Life Threats, Musculoskeletal Injuries, Environmental Emergencies, Soft Tissue Injuries, and Medical Emergencies. WFA certification is good for two years; you recertify by taking the course again. The WFA can also be used to recertify SOLO Wilderness First Responder certification.

What is Included? Your WFA payment of $200 includes instruction, training materials, and WFA certification fee. (SOLO Basic CPR is available as an optional adjunct, taught at the end of Day One for an additional $40.) It also covers Friday through Sunday entry to all seven of the Groton area state parks, plus group camping* for Friday and Saturday nights near the Osmore Pond shelter.

* Your group camp site will have lean-tos, space for your own personal tent, a fire pit, picnic tables, potable water faucets, and indoor restrooms with pay showers. There is a boat launch right next to the shelter. Participants must bring their own camping supplies and meals.

What to Bring WFA students are asked to bring lots of warm non-cotton layers; clothing suitable for getting dirty and appropriate to being active outside much of the day (you’ll be rolling around on the ground pretending to be injured, and kneeling next to mock patients in all weather). Please also bring EXTRA outdoor layers which you don’t mind getting stretched and dirty, as they will be used to build splints, keep patients warm, etc. Pro Tip: Yard sales, church sales, Goodwill and the Salvation Army have endless mounds of perfectly wonderful outdoor clothing at very little cost! Please note that meals and camping supplies are not included. A complete packing list and directions will be sent to students upon registration.

How to Register Register via mail by completing this registration form and mailing your check for $200 to Train NEK, PO Box 132, Peacham, VT 05862, OR register through Eventbrite to use a credit or debit card (extra Eventbrite fee applies).
